One of the most common problems you may face as a writer is a lack of good ideas. Whether you write articles, blog posts or fiction stories, ideas are the fuel to make the engine of writing move. And if ideas are uncommon and original, your writings can gain additional points that may help you distinguish from the mass.
Finding new material to write about is not always easy and sometimes can be quite stressful, especially if you earn a living from writing. So here are some suggestions that may help you find your inspiration again.
Look at your daily life from different angles. Our daily activities are often underrated, but if you look at them from a different perspective you may notice funny and interesting sides you had never noticed before that can be used for your writings.
Take the time to read other people’s writings. Surf the net and read blogs and articles about topics that interest you, or choose a book or a magazine and leaf through them. Reading other people’s words is not only a good exercise (you can’t be a good writer if you don’t read!) but also some articles, sentences or stories can inspire you.
Inspiration from art. Paintings, photography, music, and any piece of art are a great source of inspiration. Art lives through emotions and feelings that arouses in the looker. Stop for a minute and ask yourself what thoughts, emotions or memories come to your mind when looking at a piece of art.
Get lost in conversations. Whether it’s a conversation between you and your friends/family members, or a conversation you happen to ear on the bus or in train, they can be a great source of new ideas. Conversations are spontaneous and full of hints for stories and even anecdotes.
Go out and take a stroll. Sitting for hours in front of a monitor or a white paper sheet can be tiring if not exhausting at times. As our energies flow away, so do our ideas. Taking a deserved break and going out can help you relax and feeling revived, with new energy and ideas for your writings when go back home.
These are just some suggestion, but there can be many other ways to help you find sources of inspiration. Experiment your own, the choices are unlimited so as your ideas for new stories, articles or posts are.
One more suggestion: always bring with you a notebook and a pen to note your ideas down so that you’ll have them at hand when you write your pieces.
And don’t’ forget: good ideas are all around us. Let’s catch them and make the motors of writing rumble!
